Guitar Lessons for Adult Beginners (or piano lessons, voice lessons, drum lessons etc)

Updated: May 6

You stumbled across that dusty guitar in a closet, and decided today is the day. Jumping online, you search 'guitar lessons near me' and the Guitar Guild website comes up, amongst others. After a week or two of hesitation, you finally make the call and schedule your first lesson. You arrive in our lovely foyer nervous, despite the soft lighting, glowing 100 year old hard wood floors and comfortable leather sofas. It's worse than waiting to see the dentist, because you have no idea what to expect.

This is the first day of your story as a musician. I was an adult beginner on guitar as well, so I can be totally honest with you. Getting started is the hardest part. The next six months are as hard as it will EVER be. You're asking your body to do strange new things it's never done before. You are learning the language of music, which at first might as well be ancient greek (actually, sometimes it is!) By day, you are a competent adult, paying bills and taking names. But in the lesson studio you are back to first grade, and that is a very vulnerable feeling.

The first six months seem endless. What happened to those YouTube ads that said you could play a hundred songs in just one day? You realize those were empty promises with no relationship to the daily practice you have to do just to play 3 or 4 chords.

But then, one day, it happens. Your hands remember what they're supposed to do by themselves. The weird dots and symbols start to make sense. Sometimes you can even hear them in your head just by looking at them. Each chord you add to your collection comes more and more easily. You start to play that song you had said would be the ultimate goal. And then you realize that song was just the beginning!

From there, it gets so good. Better than anything you had imagined. You thought you knew what it would feel like, but you had no idea it was going to be this good as your world opens up to the endless possibilities of music. You are no longer practicing. You are playing!!

And it feels like the beginning of a story that doesn't need a happy ending. Because its all happy and there is no ending!
