Five things to ask before choosing a music teacher. (Bonus 6th question at the end!)
The first question I am ALWAYS asked (and this applies to both countries where I have taught music), is 'where are you'. The second is 'how much'.

And look, I get it. Most families are over scheduled so a convenient location is important. Budgets are tight, so price is always a factor.
But in nearly 30 years of teaching, only TWO parents have ever asked me if I am qualified to teach their children!
Learning an instrument one-on-one requires a very close and personal relationship that requires trust and feelings of safety. It also requires experience and opportunities that not all music teachers can provide.
So here are 5 OTHER questions you should ask:
Do you teach your students how to read music. This one is especially important to ask of guitar teachers. Not all can actually read music let alone teach this skill.
Do you offer performance opportunities? Students that participate in performance develop up to 5 times faster than those who do not.
What is your training? Did you go to college and if so are you just a performance major or did you also study music ed?
How will you motivate me or my child when they are in a practice slump?
Do you offer ensemble training (duets, bands, groups etc). Students who play in ensembles develop far stronger rhythm and timing skills than those who don't.
And finally, if you or your child is physically or developmentally disabled (including Autism Spectrum):
Do you have experience in teaching students with this disability?
